It was a tossed-off joke over lunch at a fast food chain, but it sounded like a good band name to the foursome now known as California Wives, and has since become a name making the rounds in the Chicago music scene. After releasing their debut EP Affair a year ago, these childhood buds have worked their way into the spotlight, garnering comparisons to 80s trailblazers like New Order and The Police, and some of today’s indie darlings like The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Phoenix.
Jayson Kramer (vocals, keys, guitar), Dan Zima (vocals, bass), Joe O’Connor (drums) and Hans Michel (guitar, keys) don’t mind the comparisons, as long as they can help breathe new life into music genres that have been around longer than they have.
Here to give thanks to the sounds of the past, action to the sounds of the present, and shape to the sounds of
the future. Big Science is the soundtrack to making out with your junior high crush, while watching a John
Hughes film at a YMCA lock in. The rhythm of drinking Boone's Farm in high school lust, seated on the hood
of a beat up white Hyundai, in the heat and dust of summer apple orchards. Working too hard, sleeping too
little, drinking too much, just smoked your last cigarette, last dollar harmony.
