In the middle of 1989, Jorge Drexler began to write songs and in 1992 he released his first album, "La luz que sabe robar". That same year, he graduated in medicine from the University of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay.

The release of his second album, "Radar" (1994), marked the end of his first musical phase in Uruguay, before crossing the Atlantic and settling in Spain, where he recorded his third album "Vaivén" (1996), with collaborations from Joaquín Sabina, Luis Eduardo Aute, and Javier Álvarez. From then on, he established himself in Madrid, where he has continued to release albums right up until today, and now has ten original albums and several reissues behind him (see discography below). He has also maintained a very intense concert schedule, performing his latest albums with different arrangements in sixteen countries.

It was in 2005 that Drexler achieved greater popular acclaim when he received an OSCAR® for the song "Al otro lado del río", from the film “The Motorcycle Diaries”, the first song in Spanish to win the award.

In the last few years, he has received three consecutive nominations for the Grammy Awards, four consecutive nominations for the Latin Grammy Awards, and has won, among others, two Spanish Music Awards.

In 2008, he released his 9TH album, “CARA B”, recorded live during a tour of seven cities in Catalonia. The film director Manuel Huerga also joined the project, shooting a feature-length documentary film about the tour, “Un Instante Preciso” (This Very Instant) , which was recognized with such prestigious awards as the Popular Jury Prize (feature-length documentary category) at the 12th Malaga Film Festival (2009), and was an official selection at the London Film Festival and the Havana Film Festival.
