The new drummer for Shonen Knife has begun performing with them at their live shows now, and all reports from fans are positive about her compatibility with the band, and the ease with which she is learning the material. There was some thought among fans that it might be Emi Namihara, drummer with "Ourself Beside Me", a Beijing group featuring Yang Fan, who was formerly guitarist for "Hang On The Box" from Beijing... but she is not "that Emi".
Her name is Emi Morimoto, and she was a member of an eclectic japanese female rock vocal group previously, called "Ni Hao", which is a chinese term...generally meaning "Hello". "Ni Hao" is a Kyoto-based band, & released one album in 2005, "Gorgeous" - with a lineup that featured 2 bass guitars up front and Emi-chan on drums. The album was strong on 3-part vocal harmonies, and was well received by critics and music fans who heard it. When one of the band members took leave to be with a new daughter, the band ceased performances for a time. Emi then joined up with a progressive noise/experimental group, "Ultra Jr." and also did some shows with Japanese noise/rock band, "Nasca Car".
With Etsuko taking leave of Shonen Knife, we now have Emi on the drums, and a full-time member. We hope everyone will welcome Emi-chan to the band and look forward to the talent and experience she brings to the group!!
